Additional Details

One of the best eighteenth century English maps of the western hemisphere, Robert Sayer's 1786 edition of John Gibson's map was of particular interest to empire watchers as it illustrated and listed the possessions of the various European powers as well as those of the newly minted United States of North America. It is a post-Revolutionary War wall map of North and South America gathering together geographical material from D'Anville, Jefferys and Thomas Pownall, and incorporating the new political divisions brought about by the establishment of the United States. As per the 1783 Treaty of Paris, the United States has as its western border the Mississippi River and northern border a line extending through the Great Lakes. Stevens and Tree 3e.
